Individual Assignment 10

Marta Dalton’s lecture on digital marketing and their analysis of Coca Cola was very useful. It was nice to be able to see what we have been learning about put to work in a company we all know. Marta’s PowerPoint was also very useful in that she showed us just how complicated digital marketing landscapes and machine intelligence landscapes can be. I also appreciated that she went into depth on what type of skills you would need to go into a specific field in digital marketing.
Karl Herleman gave a very informative presentation and tour of MSA. It was very fascinating how many different products (and T.V. shows!) can benefit from business analysis’ and information technology systems. During the MSA tour, I realized that there are many jobs in this line of work that does not require you to have extensive knowledge of coding and programming. During the presentation I learned about how the “waterfall” business model works, and the how that model can be very inefficient.
Ginger Polozoff’s presentation on project management was very well-organized and presented. In this presentation we learned about the steps in a project, project management, deliverables, stakeholders, project charters, network diagrams, scope creep, the triple constraint, work breakdown structure, and critical path. I think Ginger’s presentation was very effective because during that class she had the class take notes, work in groups, and quizzed for every few topics.
During this semester of Information Systems and Operations, I have developed many useful skills and have had so many good experiences listening to speakers like Marta Dalton, Karl Herleman, and Ginger Polozoff. Learning how to use Tableau, Access, and many new function on Excel has given me a much better understanding how businesses function, and will very useful in the future. I will probably use these skills in the future for my job and internship.  The team project in this class has positively affected me personally and professionally, because I have learned how to plan and work well with others. After filling out the post-course survey and looking at the pre-course survey, I realized I knew absolutely nothing about information systems, and that this class has taught me so many things that I will need for a future in business.

Individual Assignment 8

In this assignment I created a visual graph for the average familiarity, regard, relevance, and aggregate brand equity score of 10 different whiskey brands. By doing this, I learned how to load data from Excel into Tableau, create graphs, create stories, and how to use Tableau Public to post the story I have just created.

Individual Assignment 7

An important core technique when using Google Analytics is knowing how to effectively use segmentation when viewing data. Segmentation in Google Analytics allows you to look at aggregate data, which can help you understand user behavior trends. This feature could assist companies like American Eagle with their digital marketing. This could help their digital marketing because it would allow them to see what parts of American Eagle’s website is attracting people, and what products are bringing in the most money. Knowing this information could help the company’s manufacturing realize what is making some products more successful than others, which they could use to improve less successful items.
Sentiment analysis is when you categorize the feelings that are expressed in text data. This can help a company determine if their customers have a positive or negative view of a specific product or of the company in general. Text data from social media could be very useful for American Eagle’s marketing because it lets them know what their customers like and dislike about the company and products. To find this information, American Eagle could use the Twitter Sentiment App which takes their users tweets and does a sentiment analysis.
Structural data can be viewed visually by automated layout algorithms. Automated layout algorithms can show a company more apparent connections between customer complaints and specific stores by making stores and customer complaints different color nodes (circles). These nodes would be brought together and create a cluster (if there are a lot of them) if they are closely related. If there is no connection, the nodes will repel each other. Connections between nodes are shown between edges, which are lines that connect two dots. American Eagle’s customer service could create an automated layout algorithm of complaints with specific store locations to show which stores are having problems. Knowing which stores are having problems could nudge them to improve these stores, which would ultimately help American Eagle’s reputation as a company.
Through this assignment, I learned how data from social media and digital marketing can help improve a company’s profitability and relationship with the public. Segmentation in digital data collections can help a company improve less profitable products, by learning what products attract customers. Sentiment analysis can further these improvements by learning how customers feel about specific products and why. Structural data allows a company to know what parts of their company is associated more with negative views, and which parts are not. This can improve the company’s relationship with the public, because the company can learn where they have problems and fix them. Having less negative reviews can give the company a more positive view to the public.
